Believe it or not, drinking a cup of coffee every day does have its benefits. Now don’t get me wrong, sometimes it’s hard for me to chose between tea and coffee– and tea DOES have an abundance of benefits as well– but right now, we’re here to talk about coffee!
First let’s talk about everyone’s favorite– caffeine. As a college student, I swear by it to get me through long days of classes and work, or long nights staying up finishing papers. We all know that caffeine increases your alertness and reduces any feeling of fatigue throughout the day, but believe it or not, caffeine also have performance enhancing benefits, especially for athletes. Drinking coffee increases the adrenaline flow in your body, meaning you’re even more ready for physical activity. No wonder how I survived 7:30 a.m. cross country practices! Caffeine also helps your brain work more efficiently, and has been proven to make people happier!
Metabolism and Cognitive Functions
Coffee isn’t only your best friend, or your go-to, it’s also a metabolism booster! A cup of coffee has the ability to boost your metabolism by 10-11%! With a higher metabolism, you’re able to burn more calories throughout the day, without having to increase the intensity of your daily physical activities. Coffee also helps with simple cognitive functions, by making you more alert throughout the day. Studies have also shown that coffee is proven to help with long and short term memory loss, decreasing your risk of Alzheimers disease.
Along with boosting your metabolism, a cup of coffee, provided you don’t load it up with milk, sugar, and other creamers. Drinking a cup of light roasted black coffee without milk or sugar works to your advantage if you’re dieting. The caffeine in a cup of coffee also has the ability to smooth the appearance of cellulite. Drinking coffee black allows you to have a no calorie, fat free fix that fills you up at the same time. Milk and sugar are tasty too, but remember, everything in moderation!
